Caring tips for Sterling Silver Jewellery – Pehr Jewellery

Does the soft sheen of silver allure you into a collector-like status, where you find yourself investing in gorgeous pieces, with their gentle radiance spilling over your ensembles? Do you agree that the straight-up glamour of a brilliant silver jewellery piece is unmatched, and oozes charm like no other? Does the shine of versatility of silver jewellery light up your eyes as well?
Our Pehr founders are not only creators of contemporary sterling silver jewellery, but they are also somewhat connoisseurs, and possess rare pieces that are now treasured family heirlooms. If you wish to gift the pieces of silver jewellery you own to your mini-me’s one day, follow our basic caring tips to the T and let it work its magic. We promise you, you won’t be disappointed.
Digits are the rule of thumb
To know how to, or rather how much to care for your pure silver jewellery for women,  it is important to learn about its purity and composition. If your silver jewellery is rated at .95, it requires consistent polishing. However, sterling silver pieces, such as the ones available at Pehr, stand at .925, and are much more sturdy. They are easy to maintain and do not require as much care and cleaning. In case you’re unsure about what your jewellery is worth and made up of, check with your local jeweller. Knowledge is key to making your jewellery last a lifetime and beyond.
Lack of liquid is the secret behind a lifetime of silver
Did you know that pure water doesn’t damage silver? Sadly, the water that we use (even what we drink) isn’t as pure as we’d like to think, so it’s best to keep it away from your sterling silver jewellery. Chemicals cause silver to lacklustre, so keep your jewellery away when you’re in the shower. In fact, if you apply some body lotion or moisturiser post-shower, what we’d ideally advise is that you only put your sterling silver bracelet on once the cream has completely dried off. Trust us, it will make a huge difference and prevent your favourite pieces from tarnishing.
Expose your sterling silver to air and its quality disappears into thin air
No, we’re not asking you to keep your sterling silver jewellery locked inside your wardrobe forever. But, just as you’d put an expensive outfit back inside its cover and into your wardrobe, extend the same courtesy to your jewellery too. After wearing it, put it inside an air-tight bag. Don’t bunch up your silver jewellery together and put them in the same pouch. You’ll be left with tangled, scratched pieces that won’t look as promising as you’d like them to. Treat your pieces with love, care for them well and they’ll be with you all your life. If you’re extra particular about jewellery care, you can keep a silica gel packet inside your Pehr pouch.
Polish them pretty
There are two easy-peasy ways to polish your sterling silver jewellery, and they’re both an arm’s reach away. Firstly, make it your mantra to polish your jewellery with a simple microfiber cloth after wearing it each time. This simply means to wipe them properly before putting them back in their pouch. Lucky for you, our Pehr pieces come with this cloth, so you’ll always have it when you’re replacing the jewellery in its bag.
Secondly, one Sunday in a month, or even two, apply the classic version of Colgate on your toothbrush, and gently rub your sterling silver jewellery. Let its bristles run over the etchings, and really cleanse each carving. Rinse in boiled (and then cooled) water and wipe it with a microfiber cloth.
Fine jewellery looks extra refined when cared for properly. The value of silver jewellery appreciates in value and sentiment as it grows old with you. It becomes a part of who you are, it reflects your personality and taste. Take care of it and it will take care of you.
